Sardis was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia, and is located near the inner-Aegean city of Manisa in modern-day Turkey. It is said to be founded by the sons of Hercules in the 1200s BC. The city prospered with a military citadel in addition to sporting events for centuries until its decline during Ottoman rule in the 1300s. The ruins have been in continuous excavation for many years and include many sites.
