Located inland from the Northern Aegean coastline, Pergamum was a powerful and wealthy city. Its acropolis as at the top of a mountain, giving the rulers of the day a 360 degree view of any approaching threats. It is said that parchment was first made here and named after the city. Today, its ruins include temples, a gym, and an impressive amphitheater built into the side of a mountain.
