Thriae is thrilled to work with Tezgahsal, an artisan atelier owned by Melih Duyar exclusively for its Thriae Handmade collection. We wanted to introduce you to him and his amazing business.
Melih is an entrepreneur who grew up around looms, learning his family’s hand-made weaving tradition from a young age. Born in Buldan, known as the “capital of weaving”, Melih was raised in a deep-rooted textile culture. As a child, he grew up watching his father work on traditional shuttle looms in the workshop under their house. His father learned this profession from his own father and became a manufacturer who delivered woven products to all corners of Turkiye. His grandfather (his father’s father) was a weaver. He brought the knowledge he gained by working as a master on Sulzer brand looms in Switzerland between 1970-1980 to Turkiye, where he set up his own looms and started weaving both towels and cloth. His other grandfather (his mother’s father) was a shuttle loom and hand loom master. He sold the shawls and scarves he wove on hand looms for years to all corners of Turkey. This profession was adopted by all family members, from his mother to his grandmother. His mother and grandmother in the family were both women who had knowledge of weaving and had been tailors for years.
While Melih spent his childhood in this workshop, he grew up with the rhythmic sounds of the looms. Instilled with his family's love of textiles, Melih worked in the workshop during summer vacations and carried the products his family produced for fringe tying to housewives in the neighborhoods. Over time, he began to feel closer to this traditional profession. Even after he was accepted to the mechanical engineering department, he started selling these textile products he produced over the internet and exported to America, Ukraine and Canada in his early years.
After completing his university education, he decided to return to his roots instead and established the "Tezgahsal" brand and took over the business. Today, he delivers the products that his father could only sell in Turkiye years ago abroad and continues to produce with the same traditional methods, on old-generation shuttle looms and hand looms. His own slogan, "#traditiontofuture", has become not only a goal but also a symbol of Melih's mission to keep this art alive. Melih Duyar, now representing the culture he inherited from his family as the third generation, continues to continue the deep-rooted weaving tradition by producing products for business partners abroad.
Thriae and Tezgahsal's partnership brings this rich culture and beautiful styles worldwide through the Thriae Handmade collection. Each of the products is meticulously woven on traditional shuttle looms or hand looms by one of our female masters, Nezal, in Melih's workshop. With her many years of experience, Auntie Nezal skillfully applies the subtleties of weaving art and keeps the Duyar family heritage alive in each product. After looming is complete, production moves to the tassles, which are hand-tied with by women in the region. Finally, with the final sewing, packaging, and quality control, our products take their final form.
The production process highlights the value of both Buldan weaving art and women's contributions. The Tezgahsal x Thriae collaboration is not only a production process; it is also part of a mission that supports weaving culture, the labor of local artisans and women's labor. In addition to keeping traditional weaving techniques alive, our partnership with also contributes to strengthening women's economic independence.
