Thriae is committed to sustainability and ethical business practices. In a world where "fast" dominates - fashion, food, the speed at which we experience life, it is important to slow down and be mindful of the resources we are using. We owe our planet and future generations that much.
We know our customers feel the same way and want to show you how Thriae supports sustainability efforts so you can feel good about what you are buying. Here are a few things we do:
Partner with a manufacturer that prioritizes sustainability and neutralizing their carbon footprint
As of Q4 of 2024, Thriae works with a supplier that prioritizes sustainability in every step of their manufacturing process. These efforts include:
- Sourcing 100% organic Turkish cotton. The core of each of our products is cotton, and organic cotton is sustainable due to its environmentally friendly growing practice. Organic farming promotes soil health, utilizes less water, supports biodiversity, and reduces the carbon footprint when compared to its conventional counterpart. The quality of the cotton is also superior, contributing to a longer lifespan of the product it produces. And when, in the distant future, the product has neared the end of its usefulness, it is fully biodegradable.
- Being in full control of their supply chain: beginning with their cotton fields, to turning that cotton into thread, to the organic dyeing process, to the looming, to the sewing, packaging, and quality control, and finally the delivery to their customers. This allows for maximum efficiency, consistent quality, and use of fewer resources used to create our beautiful pieces.
- Establishing practices to reduce and neutralize their carbon footprint, such as utilizing solar arrays to not only power their entire operation but sell power back to the grid. They also collect rainwater and recycle all water used in their processes. The manufacturer also stays on top of maintenance of all of their machines in order to ensure maximum production efficiency and is always looking for process improvements to minimize waste.
As a family owned and operated company, their impact on the earth is as important to them as the quality of product they create. Their employees are also equally important, earning a living wage and employing artisans in all areas of expertise. Thriae is proud to work with them and their commitment to these business practices.
Partner with a small atelier for our Thriae Handmade collection to promote slow and traditional craftsmanship
Thriae Handmade showcases the unique designs and human touch brought by the time-honored tradition of looming in Turkiye. Mass production does not offer the same quality and care that a traditionally loomed piece does.

Focus on sustainability wherever we can
As a small business our impact may not be huge - but it takes many little drops to create a lake. From our end, we try to focus on sustainability as much as possible, by:
- Working with logistics companies who prioritize low-carbon transport to minimize our impact when bringing our products to the US from Turkiye
- Requesting biodegradable and recyclable packaging from our suppliers
- Utilizing biodegradable mailers when sending shipments to our customers and promoting recycling of any non-biodegradable items that may be in the shipment.
- Giving back to bee conservation efforts, as the cornerstone of sustainability is protecting our ecosystem - our pollinating friends are essential in these efforts
Turkish Peshtemals are a sustainable product in and of themselves
Even without the sustainable business practices that go into the creation of a peshtemal, they are a sustainable item thanks to their makeup and versatility:
- Flat and thin weave means less water to wash and electricity to dry
- Quick drying time means no musty orders, which can increase the time needed between laundering
- Versatile uses mean less buying of "stuff" for various purposes - you can use your peshtemal as so much more than a towel.
- Long fibers mean less stress in usage, leading to a long life span, which means less for the landfill. It is not uncommon for many generations of a family to use the same set of peshtemals in their homes.
